Strengthening the Community Economy in Bararawa and Sapala Villages Through Fish Cages

Indonesian Social Forestry Management Association (AP2SI) Kalimantan South Kalimantan (Kalsel) is currently focusing on strengthening the economy of the community in Bararawa and Sapala Villages, Paminggir District, North Hulu Sungai Regency.

Through the silvofishery or wanamina optimization program, the program which has been running since September 2024 is the result of collaboration with the Tifa Foundation and targets Village Forest Management Institutions (LPHD) and Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS).

Ahmad Miftahul Fauzi, Secretary of AP2SI South Kalimantan, said that the program aims to increase the capacity of LPHD and KUPS administrators in managing freshwater fish farming businesses sustainably.

"Our main focus is strengthening the community's economy through wise use of local potential," he said.

Previously, AP2SI South Kalimantan and Tifa Foundation held a series of activities, including socialization, workshops, and training. These activities aim to increase understanding of the concept of silvofishery and its benefits, strengthen LPHD and KUPS institutions, develop effective and gender-equitable business management skills and build collaboration between related parties.

As a follow-up, KUPS Bararawa and Sapala have started a fish farming business in snakehead fish cages.

AP2SI South Kalimantan periodically conducts monitoring and evaluation (Monev) to ensure the program runs according to plan and has a positive impact on the community. Monev includes meetings with KUPS members, discussions on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and identification of challenges and solutions.

Basrun, the program assistant, said that the community's enthusiasm for this activity was very high.

"Most of the residents are fishermen. With the fish cage business, it is hoped that they will have a more stable alternative source of income," he explained.

AP2SI South Kalimantan hopes that the silvofishery program can be a model for sustainable village economic development, empowering communities, and preserving the environment. Tifa Foundation as a partner continues to support this initiative as part of efforts to realize an open and just society.

"We hope that this program will continue, become capital and a reference for the Bararawa and Sapala village communities to develop their economy better," he said.

For your information, Tifa Foundation is an organization committed to promoting an open society through strategic collaboration with various civil society organizations in Indonesia, both at the national and local levels.
