Program<\/b><\/em> Social Forestry Improves Farmers' Welfare<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

Central Jakarta, Kominfo \u2013 President Joko Widodo received a number of social forestry (PS) actors at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (01\/31\/2023). Those present included those from Gema Perhutanan Sosial, the Indonesian Social Forestry Management Association (AP2SI), the Rejo Semut Ireng Association, Pojok Desa, and the Arupa Association.<\/p>

In the meeting, the social forestry actors expressed their appreciation to President Joko Widodo because the social forestry program has had a significant impact on farmers. Representative of Gema Perhutanan Sosial, Prof. San Afri Awang, explained that based on research conducted in several regions, farmers who received the PS program increased the area of their cultivated land.<\/p>

"Before there was social forestry, the land cultivated by forest village farmers was only 0.083 hectares, equal to 830 square meters. But after there was PS, they received a decree from the President's policy, it increased 10 times their land control to an average of 8,400 square meters," said Prof. San Afri Awang.<\/p>

The increase in the area cultivated then has an impact on increasing farmers' income. According to Prof. San Afri Awang, from his research in Pati Regency for example, farmers' income increased on average threefold, from IDR 1 million per month to IDR 3 million per month.<\/p>

"In terms of income, which we measured from several places only, there was a three-fold increase in income of PS participants compared to before PS. I think this is extraordinary and this is real work that is the initiative of the community itself, but the policy is the government. It can capitalize on their social capital to increase their income," he explained.<\/p>

In the meeting with the Head of State, the social forestry actors also submitted a number of proposals, including those related to the completion of the social forestry decree which is still pending. According to Prof. San Afri Awang, President Jokowi will immediately complete this matter as soon as possible.<\/p>

"Several proposals that the President promised to follow up on, for example, the delayed decrees, the decrees on social forestry permits that are still pending, within this month the President will realize them as soon as possible," he said.<\/p>

Meanwhile, another representative of Gema Perhutanan Sosial, Siti Fikriyah Khuriyati, hopes that all social forestry decrees in Java can be completed by the end of 2024, especially considering the land area is not too large. After that, said Siti, the government will organize those outside Java.<\/p>

"So if possible before 2024, all of it will be finished. That is the first expectation. Then, those outside Java will be arranged so that we don't have to wait until 2030 for the 12.7 million hectares to be finished, but if possible, it will be finished quickly. The point is, we want the 12.7 million hectares to be finished in the era of Mr. Jokowi, 2024. That is an extraordinary legacy," said Siti.<\/p>
